Second Degree Accelerated BSN




 

Basic Information: New Mexico State University has two different BSN programs with one located in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and the other located at a satellite campus in Grants, New Mexico.  This program is for students who have already earned a bachelor's degree in another field and have finished the basic requirements for their BSN.  The information packet for this program can be found here.

Must Dos: You need to apply to New Mexico State University, talk with a pre-nursing adviser, and apply to the College of Nursing.  You must compete a resume with prior education and work experience. You also need three letters of recommendations. 

Program Length: The program located in Las Cruces is four semesters straight through and lasts 16 months.  This program starts in the summer semester.  The program located in Grants is five semesters long but only runs the fall and spring semesters.  This program starts in the fall and is two-and-a-half years in duration.

Nursing Prerequisites: Students must have a GPA of at least 2.75 in prerequisite courses, but a 3.3 is recommended.  These courses include Anatomy & Physiology I with Lab, Anatomy & Physiology  II, Pathophysiology (for the Las Cruces campus), Statistics, and one other science course (Biology, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, or Physics).  These courses must have been taken in past seven years.  Prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of B or better.

Prior Classwork Information: Students must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA in their prior bachelor's degree.

Admission Tests: Students must complete the HESI exam prior to applying to the nursing program.
